What is Udyam Registration ?

Udyam Registration is a government initiative designed to recognize and support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. It is an official certification introduced by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, replacing the former Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system.

The word “Udyam” translates to “Enterprise” or “Venture” in English. This digital certification aims to streamline MSME recognition while unlocking a wide array of financial, legal, and infrastructural benefits that enable businesses to scale, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to India’s economic landscape.

MSMEs are classified as Micro, Small, or Medium based on both investment in plant and machinery/equipment and annual turnover. This classification is crucial for accessing benefits and incentives offered by the Indian government. The Udyam Registration Portal is where businesses register and can find information about these classifications.

Here’s a breakdown of the classification criteria:

  1. Micro Enterprises:
  • Investment: Not more than Rs. 2.5 crore.
  • Turnover: Not more than Rs. 10 crore.
  1. Small Enterprises:
  • Investment: Not more than Rs. 25 crore.
  • Turnover: Not more than Rs. 100 crore.
  1. Medium Enterprises:
  • Investment: Not more than Rs. 125 crore.
  • Turnover: Not more than Rs. 500 crore.

These revised limits, effective from April 1, 2025, aim to support businesses of all sizes, especially in the manufacturing and service sectors. The Udyam Registration Portal allows for a seamless and paperless online registration process for these enterprises, further facilitating their formalization and access to government schemes.
